We should all be proud of our Posts and members during this crisis. Across the state we have continued to serve by delivering meals, food & medical supplies to those in need, housed homeless veterans, conducted blood drives, continued to file disability claims, checked on our members, and dozens of other good deeds. We have lived up to our motto that NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS THAN THE VFW.
We are conducting a buddy check on members to ensure everyone and their families are OK. The State HQ staff have contacted over 1000 members and directing assistance to those that need it. Please call your members, check up on them and use this opportunity to update their records (address & email) If you need any assistance please contact the VFW State HQ at adjutant@njvfw.com. If you find members unemployed, laid off or having a hard time, please use your Relief Funds to take care of any needs they have and pay their dues for the year.
Any veteran experiencing mental stress – or you’re concerned about one – please contact the Department of Veterans Affairs for free, confidential support 24/7. Call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1, send a text message to 838255, or CHAT ONLINE. The NJ VET2VET HOTLINE is also available at 1-866-838-7654.

I am working alongside the State Commanders of The American Legion and DAV to ensure our Posts and members are not left behind on any stimulus packages the State Legislature may enact. Our VFW Washington Legislative Office is lobbying on your behalf and reports the Senate stimulus package includes 100% disabled veterans who do not file tax returns. They are working with the House and Treasury to ensure those veterans are not excluded in any amendments of the bill. The latest information from Washington can be found HERE
POST ELECTIONS: The VFW Commander in Chief has issued guidance which can be found HERE HERE & HERE Elections are normally conducted in April but due to the social distancing restrictions that may not happen. The effects of this crisis are changing every day and we must remain flexible. It is doubtful the Governor will lift the restrictions by April 1 which will affect our elections. Knowing a large percentage of Posts and members will not have technical knowledge or equipment to conduct the business of the organization by electronic means on short notice, I am extending the deadline for post elections until May 31 (subject to extension if required). If any Post can conduct meetings and elections by electronic means please do so but remember that you MUST notify the membership to ensure fair nominations and elections. Please review the above communications regarding elections and conducting business.
QUARTERLY TRUSTEE REPORTS: Please make an attempt to submit trustee reports to the State Quartermaster. The Post Quartermaster & Adjutant can email or mail the statements, monthly reports, minutes, and other records to the Trustees for audit. Electronic signatures or emails stating certification of audit will be accepted. Any post unable to conduct an audit will not be penalized, but audits will be due within 20 days of the Governor lifting his Executive Order.
DEPARTMENT CONVENTION: One way or another we will have a Convention. It is too early to consider rescheduling the dates or location. We will keep you informed but we continue to plan as if it is a go for June 17 thru 20. The concert scheduled that caused a shortage of rooms has cancelled leaving room openings. It is not too late to reserve rooms at the Days Inn. Forms can be found here HOUSING FORMS Convention journal ad forms can be found HERE
The State HQ is not being staffed everyday but they are working from home and can be contacted by phone 609 393-1929 and email. Our VFW Veteran Service Officers are still assisting claimants during this crisis and can be contacted: (North Josh Hansen) 973-830-6539 / joshua.hansen4@va.gov (South Dan Wine) 609-802-5217 / daniel.wine@va.gov
The VA reports 7 veterans in the East Orange Health Care System as positive for COVID-19. We know of two (2) NJ VFW members who have passed away from complications of COVID-19.
Keep the families of our departed comrades and those suffering in our prayers and protect yourselves and your families.
Please stay safe and well,
Barbara Kim-Hagemann
State Commander
